Employees come for the job. Whether they identify with a company in the long term is also decided by the place where they work every day.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

This isn't a theory from a management book. This is what I experience in practice every day \u2013 with companies that want to attract good employees, and with those that are wondering why they can't keep them.<\/p>\n

The strongest argument: The office isn't a cost factor \u2013 it's a daily signal<\/h2>\n

Employee retention is not created by furniture. It is created by the daily work experience. And office design has a significant influence on precisely that.<\/p>\n

A decision-maker invests a lot of money to find good employees. After that, these people spend a large part of their working time in rooms that convey to them every day how seriously their employer takes their needs.<\/p>\n

An employee experiences salary and benefits on an occasional basis. Their work environment is experienced every working day.<\/p>\n

That is why office design is not an issue for the design department. It is a tool for employee retention and corporate culture \u2013 and belongs on the executive board's agenda.<\/p>\n

The home office as a mirror: what the office must deliver today<\/h2>\n

Hybrid working has changed the rules of the game. If employees have better conditions for focused work at home than in the office, you shouldn't be surprised if they're reluctant to come in.<\/p>\n

The office today must offer added value that working from home cannot provide: encounters, a sense of belonging, collaboration and identification. Anyone who views working from home as competition has misunderstood the problem. Working from home is not the problem \u2013 an office lacking appeal is.<\/p>\n

A good office gives employees choices: concentration, exchange, withdrawal, informal encounters. It reduces disturbances, supports collaboration \u2013 and makes it visible: We have put thought into how you work.<\/p>\n

The most common mistakes in practice<\/h2>\n

The worst office today is not the old office. It is an office that has been newly fitted out \u2013 and still operates according to yesterday's ways of working.<\/p>\n

What I see regularly:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • No places to retreat.<\/strong>\u00a0Anyone who can't switch off or concentrate in the open-plan office eventually retreats to working from home \u2013 permanently.<\/li>\n
  • Space optimization instead of work quality.<\/strong>\u00a0As many tables as possible in as little space as possible \u2013 that saves money in the short term, but costs staff in the long term.<\/li>\n
  • Employees are not involved.<\/strong>\u00a0An office planned without the people who work in it rarely solves the right problems.<\/li>\n
  • Design without identity.<\/strong>\u00a0Interchangeable white tables, grey carpet, a few plants. Functional \u2013 but without any connection to the company, its values or its culture.<\/li>\n
  • Standardized furniture for everyone.<\/strong>\u00a0Ms Meier, standing 158 cm and weighing 52 kg, gets the same chair as Mr Schmitt, who is 198 cm and weighs 110 kg. That is not equal treatment \u2013 that is apathy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    What employees really need<\/h2>\n

    It\u2019s not about making an office nicer. It\u2019s about making it more honest \u2013 honest about the way people work today.<\/p>\n

    • choices between concentration and exchange<\/li>\n
    • Quiet spaces for confidential conversations or focused work<\/li>\n
    • Workstations that can be customised individually<\/li>\n
    • Spaces for informal encounters \u2013 not as a feel-good extra, but as a productivity driver<\/li>\n
    • An atmosphere that fits the corporate culture \u2013 and makes it visible<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Checklist: How binding is your office really?<\/h2>\n
        \n
      • Are there areas for focused work without distraction?<\/li>\n
      • Are there quiet spaces for confidential conversations or short breaks?<\/li>\n
      • Are workstations individually adjustable \u2013 seat height, desk height, lighting?<\/li>\n
      • Were staff involved in the planning?<\/li>\n
      • Does the office reflect the values and identity of the company?<\/li>\n
      • Does the office offer anything that working from home cannot?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
